Brain Boosters: Frozen Dog Treats

I saw this “brain boosters” recipe by Planet Paws and immediately knew I wanted to make it for my pups. The main ingredient in these frozen dog treats is coconut oil and I am obsessed with coconut oil! So much so that I wrote an entire article on its health benefits. Some of the ways it can improve your dog’s health include:

  • Supports healthy digestion
  • Wards off bad bacteria
  • Increases nutrient absorption
  • Aids weight management
  • Improves doggy breath and oral health
  • Supports brain health

If you are applying topically, coconut oil is also an amazing moisturizer for dog paws and noses!

Okay … enough with the amazing-ness of coconut oil. That’s just one of three nutritious ingredients used in these brain-boosting frozen dog treats. They also include almond butter and blueberries. Since research shows all three of these foods benefit brain health, Planet Paws calls the treats “brain boosters.”

Another huge plus about these treats …

They’re so easy to make! While I’ve included printable directions below, check out this video by Planet Paws to see how easy they are to whip up:

Since I don’t have a heart mold like the one in this video, my brain booster treats are little stars! While you can use whatever shape you want, I recommend sticking with a smaller mold (especially if you have small dogs like mine). Each of my treats has a little less than a teaspoon of coconut oil in them. As a general rule of thumb – feed your dog a 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil for every 10 pounds of body weight. Since my guys are 5lbs and 8lbs, I actually cut one in half before serving it to them.

If you’re looking for a good brand of coconut oil, here is a link to the one I use. I definitely recommend sticking with an organic, extra virgin coconut oil.
