If you’ve read through any of the other recipes on my blog then you know how important I think it is to ditch the store-bought treats and bake your own. I prefer my dogs eating all-natural treats that aren’t loaded with chemicals, preservatives, or other harmful ingredients. Since you’re reading this, I’m guessing you do too 🙂 The easiest way to monitor what you’re feeding your pup is to make it yourself. Up until now, I’ve been making a lot of peanut butter-based treats. Today, I decided to experiment with veggies.
I feel like one of those moms who tries to disguise vegetables with something more appealing in hopes of coaxing her children into eating something nutritious. I’ve tried feeding my dogs carrots before and they spit it right out. However, when I shred the carrots and hid them in these treats, they loved um’ … go figure!!!
If your dogs are anything like mine then they are going to gobble these treats right up. Then, they’ll probably beg for more! All you need are carrots, a sweet potato, an egg, and some whole wheat flour. *If your dog has a wheat allergy you can always use a gluten-free flour alternative. Check out the full recipe below:
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup baked sweet potato
- 1/2 cup finely shredded carrots
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup water
- Preheat oven to 350Âş
- Line baking sheet with parchment paper
- In a large bowl, add the flour, sweet potato, carrots, egg and water.
- Mix well until all the ingredients are combined.
- Continue to knead until you get a big dough ball.
- Either with your hands or a rolling pin, flatten out dough ball to about 1/4" in thickness.
- Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter and place them onto the parchment lined baking pan.
- Bake at 350Âş for approximately 30 minutes, until biscuits are golden.
- Cool on wire rack.
- Store in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 1 week OR freeze for up to 3 months.
- If your dog has a wheat sensitivity, you can switch out the whole wheat flour for oat flour. The consistency may just be a little different.
My dog wants to know is this biscuit soft or hard? Thanks.
Hi Lisa! The outside of the bone is hard, but not so hard that you can’t easily break it in half.  The inside is a little softer. If you want it harder on the inside, you will have to cook it longer. The longer you bake it – the harder it will get. Just watch them so they don’t burn 🙂
