A dog food brand sold nationwide at select PetSmart stores is making the news this week. That brand is Simply Nourish, and approximately 51,000 packages of their frozen dog food is being recalled due to elevated levels of Vitamin D.
What’s Recalled
This recall comes from parent company Wet Noses Natural Dog Treat Company of Monroe, Washington. Affected Simply Nourish frozen food products were packaged in 2lb and 4.5lb packages across specific date ranges.

About Elevated Vitamin D Levels
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:
“Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels or over a long period of time can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.”
If you’ve fed the recalled food to your dog and he’s experiencing the above symptoms then schedule a vet visit ASAP.
What Caused This Recall?
Routine nutrition testing discovered elevated Vitamin D levels in the food products listed above. Further investigation found the problem occurred due to a change in vitamin mix dosage.
According to FDA: “…the vitamin mix dosage (was) being significantly reduced by the vitamin mix manufacturer, and this change was not detected or properly communicated. As a result, the dosage was not reduced.”
No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, and no other Simply Nourish products are affected.
Officials from the company wrote: “We care deeply about our customers and their pets, and have put corrective actions into place to ensure this issue does not reoccur.”

Pet parents who have purchased and feed the foods with the specific lot/date codes listed above should stop feeding them immediately. Customers are urged to return the food to the place of purchase for a full refund.
