It’s officially pie season! And what better way to celebrate than with an apple pie for your pup? Sure, our dogs can’t partake in a slice of pie made for people … since it’s filled with sugar, spices, and butter. But, these cute bites were created with Fido in mind, and only call for a few dog-friendly ingredients. Try them! I bet they’ll make your dog’s tail wag.
A Look at the Ingredients
Between the crust and the filling, you’ll be using:
- Oat and Coconut Flours – This dog-approved pie is made with a blend of oat flour and coconut flour, keeping it a gluten-free bite. My favorite flour brand is Bob’s Red Mill.
- Applesauce – You know what they say: An apple a day keeps the doctor away! When searching for the perfect applesauce to serve your pooch, look for an unsweetened option that only includes apples on the ingredient list.
- Egg – While the egg acts as a binder in this recipe, it also provides protein, vitamin D, and other beneficial nutrients.

The Tools
- Dry measuring cups
- Liquid measuring cup
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Spoon
- Parchment paper
- Rolling pin
- Round Cookie Cutter
- Mini Muffin Tin

Method
- Preheat oven to 350ºF and grease a mini muffin tin with olive oil. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add all crust ingredients. Stir with a spoon, until you're left with crumbly bits. Then, knead with your hands until you form a dough ball.
- Sandwich dough ball between two pieces of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to roll flat.
- Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out crusts. Then, transfer to a mini muffin tin to shape.
- Bake for 15 minutes.
- In the meantime, make your filling by stirring together applesauce and egg.
- Fill half-baked crusts. Then, bake an additional 15 minutes.
Notes
- If the dough ball feels sticky, let it rest on the counter for about 5 minutes before rolling. That sticky feeling will go away as the flours absorb the liquid ingredients.
- Store mini apple pie dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or in the freezer for up to 1 month.
- Don’t feel like making pie? Use the crust ingredients to create dog biscuits. Without the filling, these will last in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for 3 months.
