I’ve wanted to try paw wax for a few months now. I take my little Chihuahua on daily runs (okay … more like brisk walks) around our new community and the rough pavement often leaves him with cracked paw pads and blisters. Just as I started looking into dog booties, I stumbled across Nutri-Vet, a company that offers a wide range of veterinary formulated animal supplements and products. I decided to give their natural pad guard wax a try and, after using it for about a week, I already see an improvement.
The Benefits of Paw Wax
Paw wax can help protect your pooch’s paws from gravel, asphalt, sand, hot pavement, ice, snow, and salt/chemical-treated roads. Along with providing a protective barrier from various surfaces and seasonal dangers, Nutri-Vet’s Pad Guard Wax also touts that it can help heal cracked pads and abrasions. Sounds good to me!
What It’s Made Of
Right off the bat, I loved that the product is made in the USA and boasts a natural ingredient list. I’m all about natural! Ingredients include:
- Mineral Oil – provides a protective coating that helps alleviate mild eczema.
- Beeswax – is a natural emulsifier that helps to seal and protect the skin.
- Paraffin Wax – helps pads grip slippery or smooth surfaces.
- Silica – helps cool and calm the skin from irritation.
- Orange Essential Oil – has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
My Experience With Nutri-Vet Pad Guard Paw Wax For Dogs
Before my paw wax arrived in the mail, I took Diego on a two-mile walk/jog. When we plopped down onto the couch afterward, I found tiny blisters and cuts on each of his paws. My heart broke. I washed his feet, let him heal, and waited until the wax arrived to take our next stroll.
Day 1 Of Using The Paw Wax
Since the product’s directions say to apply a thin coating of the wax on each paw and in between toes, I carefully pressed Diego’s feet into the two-ounce container, gliding his paw on top of the wax. One mile into our walk I noticed him slowing down. When I picked Diego up to check his paws, I saw the early stages of a blister. It appeared as though the wax had also rubbed off by this point. So I picked him up and carried him home.
Even though I saw a blister forming, this was definitely an improvement from our previous walks. So I was eager to see how the product would benefit Diego overtime.
Day 2 Of Using The Paw Wax
This time, I applied a thicker coating to his paws. Since the product is hard, I dug my fingers into the wax and rubbed a little glob into each paw. I also made sure to rub the wax on the sides of his paw pads and in between his toes. We walked for about a mile and a half that day and he didn’t get any blisters. Lesson learned? Apply a thicker coating of the wax for a better result!
After One Week Of Usage …
Not only is Nutri-Vet’s paw wax protecting Diego’s paws during our walks, but I can see a clear difference in how his paw pads feel. As time goes by, his paws are definitely getting softer! I plan to use this product on a regular basis to keep his tootsies in tip-top shape.
