I was at a friend’s house the other night and she told me about a very interesting conversation she had with her vet. When her adorable Shih Tzu stepped on the scale and tipped into the overweight category, the first thing her vet asked was, “Are you feeding him human food?” This made my eyebrows raise because the vet didn’t ask how much food she feeds her pooch or if she ever exercises her dog. Nope—she went directly to human food. The thing is, studies show dogs who eat healthy human foods—such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and human-grade meats—are better off than those who only eat processed kibble and store-bought treats that are loaded with questionable preservatives, cheap fillers, and sugar! Of course, there are some human foods that our canine kids can’t eat, and swapping processed dog food with processed human food is really no better. But dog nutritionists say the following eight superfoods should definitely earn a spot in your dog’s diet!
