Recall Alert: Viva Raw Food Tested & Recalled After Customer Complaint

Viva, a raw pet food company, is voluntarily recalling one lot of their Duck recipes – Viva Duck for Dogs (Ground), Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked), Viva Duck for Cats and Viva Pure Duck (for cats and dogs). This recall comes after one customer complained to the FDA and samples tested positive for Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes.

What’s Recalled

According to Viva’s official recall notice, the food in question was sold as frozen 1lb bricks in clear vacuum packaging with Lot Number 22853. They started shipping this lot to customers on 10/24/23 and the last units were distributed on 12/06/23. This lot was sent to 1,500+ customers.

After receiving one complaint about this lot, the FDA obtained and tested samples of Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked). The samples came up positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. According to a statement on Viva’s website, “This was the only lot that had a positive test sample by the FDA. Our HACCP procedures in our USDA manufacturing facility include a full clean & sanitation before and after each lot is produced. We also regularly perform microbial testing on our products through a 3rd party lab to verify that all of our products are safe.”

Feed this Food?

If you have any of the recalled food, you should have received a direct notice from Viva. If you don’t see an email from them, please check your spam and junk folders. Additionally, if you feed their food, check your packaging for the impacted Lot #22853.

If you have any recalled product remaining, Viva is asking you to take a photo of your remaining product and fill out THIS response form. Then, safely dispose of the product in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access. Make sure you do not touch the contaminated food product with your bare hands. Plus, thoroughly clean all areas where the food may have come into contact.

Salmonella and Listeria

Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can affect animals eating the products. Additionally, there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider.

Pets with Salmonella and Listeria infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. It’s important to note: Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and pass it on to other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and exhibited any of the mentioned symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
