Gluten-Free Oatmeal Strawberry Doggie Treats

So I have officially assigned my dogs a day job. I think it’s time they pull their own weight around here. They are now my dog treat taste testers! Let me tell you, they aren’t complaining. I mean, they’re getting paid pretty well! Their most recent job was testing out these oatmeal strawberry doggie treats. According to my pups, they are a huge success.

Okay, I have a confession. Since they are made out of healthy human foods (just oatmeal, strawberries, coconut oil, and an egg) I decided to try one myself. Since they don’t have any sugar they’re a bit bland to my tastebuds. A little jam or butter smeared on top would fix that, though!!! lol So if you really want to indulge with your pooch, you can!

I also want to mention how easy these things are to make. If you aren’t used to baking homemade dog treats then you may be a little hesitant at first. I promise you, though, they don’t take a long time to make and won’t leave you with a huge bill because you probably have most of the ingredients already. Plus, knowing your pooch is eating preservative-free, gluten-free, and all around healthy treats, offers peace of mind.

I hope your little ones enjoy these as much as mine do!

The Recipe

Gluten-Free Oatmeal Strawberry Doggie Treats

Ingredients

  • 2 cup oat flour
  • 3/4 cup frozen strawberries, defrosted with its own juice
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 large egg

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add flour, mashed strawberries, coconut oil, and beaten egg. Mix together with a fork or spoon.
  3. With your hands, knead until you form a dough ball. The dough will be a little moist and sticky.
  4. Roll out little balls and flatten them into bites (approximately 1” round and about 1/4” thick). Place them onto the baking sheet. Space them so they don’t touch, but they don’t need a lot of in-between space since they won’t rise or spread.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes in a 350º oven.
  6. Turn oven off and let them cool in the oven. This will allow them to continue to dry out. They will be dry, but not as hard as a biscuit. You will still be able to break them.

Notes

Ovens can vary, so when first baking a new item watch closely near the end of the directions bake time (in case you have to adjust your cooking time a little).
