The devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene is a sobering reminder of nature’s power. I live in a suburb of Charlotte, NC. My area experienced flooding, countless downed trees (many even slicing through homes), and widespread power outages. While our area was hit, we certainly didn’t see the worst of it. Just a couple hours away, up in the NC mountains, entire towns have been left in ruin. I’m sure you’ve seen photos showing the total loss and devastation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this storm in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
As these areas begin the long road to recovery, many of us are looking for ways to help. Along with helping people and local businesses, it’s important to remember the many pets who have been displaced or affected by this storm. Below, I’ve compiled a list of ways to assist pets impacted by Hurricane Helene … or, really, any major storm. Every small act of kindness can make a difference in the lives of these animals.
Foster Pets Impacted by Severe Storms
Animal shelters aren’t immune to damage caused by hurricanes. Area shelters may have taken on water, experienced structural damage, or lost power. These all make it very difficult for them to continue operating effectively. In addition, shelters often become overcrowded as pets are separated from their families or rescued from dangerous areas. By fostering a dog or cat in need, you can help alleviate this strain. If you have the time and space, consider providing a safe temporary home until the animal can be reunited with its family or find a new forever home. Fostering plays a vital role in giving these pets the care and comfort they need during a crisis.
Donate to Animal Rescue Organizations
Another way you can make an impact is by donating to animal rescue organizations on the front lines. Oftentimes, severe storms leave shelters needing extra pet food, bottled water, crates, transport carriers, blankets, towels, beds, and cleaning supplies. Or, perhaps you donate money to a trusted organization that is actively involved in hurricane relief efforts. For example, the Humane Society of the United States Animal Rescue Team is currently deployed to multiple locations across the Southeastern United States to provide food, resources, and veterinary care. As a result, they are collecting monetary donations here. No matter how large or small your donation is, every little bit can help.
Participate in Supply Drives
Want to help donate supplies on a larger scale? Many communities organize supply drives to collect much-needed items for pets impacted by storms. Consider donating essentials like food, water, blankets, toys, and leashes. Items such as crates and carriers are especially valuable, as they help transport pets safely out of disaster zones. If there isn’t a supply drive happening near you, consider organizing your own!
Volunteer Your Time
If you’re unable to foster or donate supplies, consider volunteering your time at a local shelter. Shelters and rescue organizations often need extra hands during times of crisis, whether it’s to help with feeding, walking, cleaning, or organizing donations. Even a few hours of your time can make a significant impact.
Spread Awareness
Raising awareness is another simple yet powerful way to help. Use your social media platforms to share updates, fundraisers, and information about rescue efforts for pets impacted by Hurricane Helene. The more visibility these organizations and animals receive, the more help they are likely to get.
