Salmon Crisps: A Simple Dog Treat Idea

Does your dog like fishy treats? If so, you’ve gotta try these salmon crisps! I like to think of them as fish chips because, truly, it’s just canned salmon flakes baked to a crisp. This single ingredient dog treat is so simple to make that I don’t even think you can call it a recipe. With one can of plain salmon and about 5 minutes of prep, it’s more like a treat idea! A Little About Salmon for Dogs

In general, salmon is a wonderful addition to your dog’s diet. It’s high in protein, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, chock full of vitamins A, B-6, B12, and D, and is a good source of minerals, like potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. You can find out more about salmon for dogs in our Food Facts Feature HERE.

Sure, fresh salmon is wonderful. In fact, I share a fresh Salmon Jerky recipe in my dog treat cookbook, Proud Dog Chef: Tail-Wagging Good Treat Recipes.

In a pinch, though, I love using canned salmon as an ingredient in my dog’s snacks. When selecting your canned salmon, just use a can that’s labeled: skinless, boneless, plain, in water, no salt or flavors added.

Ingredients

  • 1 Can Salmon Boneless, Skinless, In Water)

Method

  1. Pre-heat oven to 400ºF. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside for later.
  2. Drain canned salmon.
  3. Pour fish onto a cutting board.
  4. Separate chunks of salmon and flatten each chunk with a paper towel. Press firmly, pulling out any excess moisture. Once flattened, they should look like salmon chips.
  5. Place flattened salmon chunks onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until each "chip" treat is lightly golden on the edges and fully crisp.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Make Other Fish Crisps for Your Dog

Swap the salmon with another canned fish (in water), like sardines, anchovies, smelts, etc. Depending on the fish, the bake time may be slightly different.
