Mid America Pet Food Expands Voluntary Recall Due to Possible Salmonella Health Risk

Mid America Pet Food has expanded its voluntary recall due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall now encompasses 29 types of dog food and six types of cat food. This updated recall expands the FDA’s previous warnings published on October 30, 2023

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products. Plus, there is a risk to humans handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. More on the impact of salmonella infection below.

As of November 1, 2023, seven people reported Salmonella infections. The CDC reports six of those seven cases were in children one year of age or younger. One person was hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

What’s Recalled

The recalled products were manufactured at the company’s Mount Pleasant, Texas facility and shipped to retailers nationwide. Voluntarily recalled brands include: Victor Super Premium Dog Foods, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and some Member’s Mark varieties with Best By Dates before 10/31/24. What Caused the Expansion?

This expanded voluntary recall was initiated after some product lots tested positive for Salmonella. These tests were performed at random, and targeted sampling of the finished product, including by the firm and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.

About Salmonella

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): “Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms… Children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems may be at greater risk of Salmonella infection.”

Pets infected with Salmonella don’t always display symptoms. Signs can include lethargy, decreased appetite, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. It’s important to note that infected pets can shed the bacteria in their feces and saliva without showing signs of being sick. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
