Midwestern Pet Foods Recalls Multiple Dog and Cat Food Brands Due to Possible Salmonella

Midwestern Pet Foods (of Evansville, Indiana) is voluntarily recalling multiple brands of dog and cat food. This comes after routine sampling by the company revealed the pet foods may contain Salmonella. 

What’s Recalled?

Recalled products include specific lots of CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Venture, Unrefined, Sportmix Wholesomes, Pro Pac, Pro Pac Ultimates, Sportstrail, Sportmix, and Meridian.

If you fill your furry friend’s bowl with any of these pet food brands, you’ll want to grab the bag and look for the following information. *Note: You can find lot code information on the back of the pet food bags. 

The one thing the recalled foods all have in common? They were manufactured at Midwestern Pet Foods Monmouth, Illinois facility. The unique Monmouth Facility identifier is located in the date code as an “M”.

*All other Midwestern Pet Foods products are unaffected by this recall.

Where Were These Foods Sold?

The recalled foods were distributed to retail stores nationwide. Plus, they were sold through online retailers. 

Distributors and retailers should immediately pull recalled lots from their inventory and shelves. None of these recalled foods should continue to be sold or donated. 

Salmonella

Pets infected with Salmonella don’t always display symptoms, but signs can include lethargy, decreased appetite, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. If your pet has these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

It’s important to note that infected pets can shed the bacteria in their feces and saliva without showing signs of being sick.

People with Salmonella infection can experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most people’s symptoms appear 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The infection usually lasts for 4-7 days and most people recover without treatment. However, for some people, diarrhea may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. Young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.

No pet or human illnesses have been reported in connection to this recall to date.

Feed These Foods?

If you have any of the recalled foods listed above, officials say to stop feeding them to your pets. Pet parents are asked to toss the foods in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access them. 

Once the recalled foods are safely thrown away, make sure to wash and sanitize any pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers the food may have come into contact with.
