The number of dog food recalls continues to rise this week as Columbia River Natural Pet Foods Inc. of Vancouver, WA issues a voluntary recall for packages of frozen raw pet foods that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The pet food company is recalling 933 packages of their product called “Cow Pie”, which is fresh frozen raw meats for both dogs and cats. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled food to date. The potential contamination was flagged after routine testing by the Washington State Department of Agriculture revealed Listeria monocytogenes in one package.
What To Watch For
The recalled Cow Pie food comes frozen in 2 lbs. purple and white plastic chubs. They’re marked with an orange sticker on the back with the Lot #81917 (processed on August 19, 2017). Cow Pie was distributed in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington through retail stores and direct delivery.
Listeria monocytogenes may affect animals eating the products, as well as humans who have handled contaminated foods (especially if they haven’t washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to this product).
Animals with Listeria infections are rare. But customers should keep an eye out for symptoms such as: weakness, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, nervousness, muscular and respiratory signs, depression, shock, and possibly death. According to the FDA:
“Animals that recover may become carriers and serve as potential sources of infection to other animals. In addition to the possibility of becoming sick, such infected animals can shed Listeriamonocytogenes through their feces onto their coats and into the home environment and thus serve as sources of infection to humans and other animals in the household. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
Listeria monocytogenes is one of the leading causes of human death from foodborne illness. Healthy people infected with Listeria may experience similar symptoms and should watch for: nausea, vomiting, aches, fever, and diarrhea. According to the FDA:
“Listeriamonocytogenes infections can also spread through the bloodstream to the nervous system (including the brain), resulting in meningitis and other potentially fatal problems. Pregnant women are more susceptible to Listeria infection, which can result in abortion. The young, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems also are more vulnerable.”
When handling raw food, it’s always important to wash your hands thoroughly and follow the safety instructions.
