I've been having too much fun on Amazon, loading up on summer essentials for my dogs. Here are our new favorites. Plus, the products we've loved for years!

10 Summer Essentials For Dogs

Who else is enjoying this warmer weather? I know we are! As the temperatures continue to rise, I’ve been having a little too much fun on Amazon, loading up my digital cart with summer essentials and goodies for my two pups. So, I figured I would share some of our new favorites, along with a few products we’ve been enjoying for years!

Water Bottle with Dog Bowl

No matter what season it is, your dog should always have access to fresh water. But, during the late spring and summer months, it’s even easier for your dog to get dehydrated. When heading out for a long walk or day trip, I like to bring this water bottle along. On the surface, it looks like a regular water bottle, but it features a food-grade silicone flap that you simply flip up and voila — you have yourself a water bowl for your pooch! This particular product on Amazon also comes with a collapsable bowl (it can hold up to 12 oz of water or 1.5 cups of dog food) and waste bag dispenser.

Doggy Sunscreen

Did you know dogs can get sunburn? Turns out, our canine companions are at risk of all the same dangers as we are when it comes to UV rays. I’m talking about painful sunburn, tumors, skin cancer, etc. While all dogs are at risk, some are more susceptible than others — I share more details about dog sunburns in THIS article. One way to help protect your pooch is to apply a little dog-formulated sunscreen before outings.

I would like to stress: Only use a sunscreen made for dogsNever use human sunscreen on your pooch. Most human sunscreens contain zinc oxide, PABA, and other chemicals that should not be licked or ingested. They are toxic to your dog. This Epic-pet Sun Protector Spray is actually the only sunscreen for dogs on the market that’s FDA-compliant. It dries quickly, protects against both UVA and UVB rays, has a pleasant fragrance, and won’t leave a greasy residue.

UV-Protective Clothing

Some companies actually make sun protective clothing for our fur kids. Sun clothing is made from fabrics that protect against UVA and UVB sun rays. Many are light to wear and dry quickly. They also decrease the need for sunscreen on the covered areas. I recently purchased these protective dog shirts by Canine Friendly on Amazon. They offer a UPF protection of 40+, which means that it only lets through 1/40th of the sun rays to get to your dog’s skin. These shirts come is sizes XXS-XL.

Healing Balms

During the warm-weather months, us pet parents can take a few extra measures to protect our pups from the harsh sun and hot pavement. These healing and nourishing balms by the Natural Dog Company can help. This 5-Pack contains a trial size of:

  • Snout Soother – helps treat and prevent painful, dry, crusty, chapped, cracked, and bleeding dog noses.
  • PawTection – specially formulated to create a nourishing barrier to protect sensitive paw pads against the elements (heat, cold, salt, snow, gravel, sand)
  • Paw Soother – natural paw balm specially formulated to heal rough, chapped, dry dog paw pads.
  • Skin Soother – natural antibiotic topical treatment for cuts, rashes, abrasions, burns, surgical wounds, and dry/itchy/irritated skin.
  • Wrinkle Balm – formulated to treat and prevent skin fold disease, infection, and discomfort. It is fortified with anti-fungal properties to eradicate yeast, bacteria, and crusty buildup.

Each product is fragrance-free and made with organic ingredients.

Cooling Gel Pad

About four years ago, during a family BBQ, one of our guests walked in with her adorable Shih Tzu in one hand and a blue pad in the other. We all giggled at first sight, but, really, her dog got the last laugh. Because he comfortably laid outside with us as we dripped sweat. That was the first time I had ever seen a cooling gel pad and I’ve been obsessed ever since.

This cooling pad features pressure-activated cooling and does not require any refrigeration! Just set it out and let your pup chill on the cool, comfortable surface. There are a bunch on the market and I highly recommend reading reviews. This one by Hugs Pet Products is a top-rated cooling mat and comes in 3 sizes: Medium, Large, and Extra Large.

Cooling Vest

This is a neat idea! Before you head out for a walk on a hot summer day, grab this cooling vest, soak it in cold water, wring it out slightly, and then put it on your dog. It’s made with a highly-absorbent fabric and the cool touch can help prevent your pup from overheating. Reviewers say it works like a charm!

Life Vest

If you’re planning to let your four-legged fur-ball take a dip in the pool then you may want to consider getting a life vest. Available in five sizes, ranging from XS-XL, more than 4K people have already shared positive reviews on Amazon. It’s even earned an “Amazon’s Choice” badge!

Pet Pool

Speaking of letting your pooch take a dip in the pool, if you don’t have access to one, why not get a pet pool?! There are plenty of pet pools you can choose from. This particular pet pool (which is an Amazon best-seller) caught my attention because it’s collapsable. So, it’s easy to store come Fall!

Dog Cot with Canopy

As soon as the weather starts warming up, my husband and I love to hang out in our backyard with the dogs. We relax while they run around, sniff everything, explore, and tire themselves out. Once they’re tired, they like to plop down in a shaded area. That’s where a raised cot with a canopy comes in handy. The raised cot gets your dog off the hot ground and the canopy provides much-needed shade. This one is my favorite and my dogs love it too!

Portable Pet Pen

For afternoon visits to the nearby park, I love bringing my portable pet pen along. It gives my dogs a safe space to play while I kick back and read a good book. I’ve had the Carlson Pet Products Pet Pen for about two years and upgraded to their deluxe edition (which features a sun-protective and bug-protecting canopy) last year. If you’re in the market for a pet pen then I highly recommend checking them out — their products are super high quality.

The Carlson Pet Products pet pen comes in two sizes — a 6 panel and an 8 panel. I personally have the 6-panel pet pen and find there’s plenty of room for my two small dogs to move around and play. I usually fill it up with blankets and toys. But, here is look at the sizes:

  • 6-Panel Dimensions: 48” W x 26” H
  • 8-Panel Dimensions: 62” W x 26” H
