Review: Tumble’s Spillproof and Machine Washable Rugs

If you share your home with dogs, chances are, you’ve had to clean up a mess or two (or three). Perhaps you have a puppy in the potty training phase, a senior dog dealing with some incontinence issues, or an easily excited dog who lets out a little squirt when you come home from work. Maybe your canine companion ate something he shouldn’t and is now experiencing a bout of 💩 … or your dog ran inside with muddy paws. Whatever the case, accidents happen! That’s where Tumble comes in.

I think every pet parent on the planet wishes there was an easier way to deep clean area rugs. I’m certainly raising my hand on this one. That’s why I love Tumble’s spillproof and machine-washable rugs. I added my first Tumble rug to my living room a few years ago. Since I liked it so much, I added a second one to my dining room and a runner in my kitchen. Then my mom (AKA my partner here at Proud Dog Mom) purchased one for her house. Since living with these rugs for a while, here are my thoughts …

A Few Key Features

  • Spillproof – When liquid hits these rugs, it simply beads up (instead of soaking into the fibers). Just grab your paper towel and wipe away puppy pee accidents, doggy drool, or spilled drinks. This is a real game-changer! I talk more about the spillproof effect below, in the FAQ section.
  • Machine Washable – For bigger messes, just throw your rug in the washing machine! They’re heavy enough to impress, but also lightweight enough to fit into your washer. (Yes, even the largest 9’x12′ is designed to fit in a washing machine. Check out the video below, showing my 8’x10′ Tumble in my washer!)
  • Stylish Design Options – From traditional to modern, Tumble has a variety of designs to choose from. They recently added a bunch of new designs. So, I used it as an opportunity to refresh my living room. Here is my latest rug:
  • Varying Sizes – These rugs come in runners all the way up to 9×12.
  • Non-Slip – Each Tumble comes with a cushioned, non-slip pad, which features a puzzle-piece design. Once you interlace all of the pad’s pieces, you simply lay the rug on top. The pad holds the rug in place by tucking into corner pockets on the underside of the rug.
  • Comfy to Walk On – Not only does the pad make for easy assembly, but it’s also comfortable to walk on.
  • Free of Harmful Chemicals – These rugs are free of harmful chemicals and designed for homes with pets and children. They’re OEKO-TEX certified. They’re low-pile, hypoallergenic, and limit the collection of pet hair and dust.

How to Assemble

Step 1: Each pad piece comes labeled with a number. Start by placing each pad piece in its intended spot, interlocking the grooves, and pressing down until each piece is locked together.

Step 2: Place the rug onto the pad. Tuck each corner of the pad into the pockets on the underside of the rug. While any creases should relax after a few days, I personally used my iron (on its lowest setting) to smooth everything out. Note: The rug should be larger than the pad, as it will shrink slightly after washing.

Step 3: Gently pull the rug tight and apply the Corner Grippers.

FAQs

I shared a video on TikTok and Instagram Reels, highlighting these rugs by Tumble. The video went viral on both platforms, attracting over 11 MILLION views combined (video below)! With so many views, I noticed a lot of the same questions pop up. So, here are the answers to some FAQs:

  • Does the spillproof effect wear off over time? – The spillproof nature may slowly begin to diminish after washing, however, this will vary based on multiple factors (e.g., detergent, wash cycle, humidity etc.) The spillproof coating is meant to serve as a “first line of defense.” For those larger messes, the rug can always be washed to remove spills and stains. While I personally haven’t done this, I asked the Tumble team if anything can be done to re-activate the spillproof effect. They said you can re-coat with a scotch guard or something similar over time, if you would like.
  • How long will the rug last? – There is no limit to the number of washes these rugs can go through!
  • Do Tumble rugs need to be washed in a front-loading washing machine? – The rugs are fine to wash in a front or top-load washing machine.
  • How do Tumble rugs do with pet hair? They’re low-pile, so they limit the collection of pet hair getting into the fibers. My Chihuahua sheds, but, since I run my vacuum daily, I really don’t notice it!
  • Is it hard to vacuum? – Tumble recommends you vacuum on the lowest setting (without the use of a beater brush). They also recommend you don’t use a robot vacuum. I must admit: I’m a huge lover of my robot vacuum and I let it run daily. So far, I haven’t had any problems with my Shark Ion Robot cleaning my Tumble rugs.
  • Can these rugs be used on LVP flooring: Yes!
  • How much do they cost? The cost varies depending on size. Check out the Tumble website HERE to see pricing.

Washing Best Practices

When it’s time to wash your rug, Tumble’s washing instructions recommend you machine-wash cold, avoid detergent that contains bleach, and do not use fabric softener. As for drying, you can either tumble dry on low heat or hang dry. If hang drying, it will take about 1-2 days.
