UPDATED: If your dog eats Purina dry food, stop what you’re doing and go check their bag. Nestlé Purina PetCare Company is voluntarily recalling select lots of their Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food due to potentially elevated vitamin D levels. This recall was first reported on February 8, 2023 and then expanded to include additional lots on March 10, 2023.
The Backstory
This recall was first sparked after Purina received notice about multiple sick dogs. In a recall alert published by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Purina confirmed two separate cases (to date) of dogs exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the recalled foods. Once taken off the diet, each of these dogs recovered.
An investigation prompted by Purina then uncovered new information about a production error from a U.S. supplier. It was made only for this specific formula and resulted in potentially elevated levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D and Dogs
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs. However, depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, too much of it can lead to health issues. Dogs experiencing Vitamin D toxicity may experience the following symptoms:
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Increased thirst
- Increased urination
- Excessive drooling
- Renal (kidney) dysfunction
