If you’re looking for ways to keep your dog entertained this summer, you’re in the right place. Here are some water activities to try with your pooch.

7 Fun Water Activities for Your Adventure-Loving Dog

Does your dog go wild at the sight of water? Whether it’s a splash pad, pool, lake, or ocean, water-loving dogs can’t resist playing! If you’re looking for ways to keep your aquatic adventurer entertained and active this summer, you’re in the right place. Here are some fun water activities to try with your pooch.

1. At-Home Splash Pad

A doggy splash pad is the perfect way to provide your pup with some cooling playtime. It’s easy to set up- just hook it up to a garden hose and then watch the water flow through its sprinklers and fill the center (like a shallow pool). I purchased this splash pad from Amazon and have let my dogs play with it several times. They were quite confused at first … and hesitant to run through the sprinklers. But, after a few games of fetch (where I strategically threw the ball into the pad’s center) they started enjoying it! Check out their reaction in this video:

2. Pool Party

Nothing is more refreshing on a hot summer day than taking a dip in the pool. If you have one in your backyard, invite some of your friends and their dogs over for a pool party! In case you were questioning it … yes … your dog can go in the pool. Chlorine levels in a properly balanced pool are pretty low, and considered safe for dogs to swim. A quick rinse after your dog’s dip will help wash away any leftover chlorine and reduce the risk of skin irritation or dryness. Or perhaps you have a saltwater pool. In that case, that’s fine too. In fact, saltwater pools may be gentler on your dog’s skin. With that said, it’s still a good idea to rinse him off with a hose afterward. As with any water activity, supervise your dog at all times. 3. Beach Playtime

Have you ever taken your pup to the beach? It’s one of our favorite warm-weather activities. There’s something so special about watching a carefree canine running along the shore, dipping their paws into the ocean, and digging in the sand. It’s pure joy! Before you book a trip to the shore, always check local regulations and ensure the beach is dog-friendly. During your search for pup-friendly beaches, it’s important to know that some beaches will allow dogs at certain times of the day and/or year. Read the fine print! 4. Canoeing or Kayaking

If you enjoy canoeing or kayaking, bring your water-loving dog along for the ride. It’s a fantastic way to bond and explore new environments together. Just think about it: These activities combine the thrill of adventure with the calming presence of water! Before loading your dog into a canoe or kayak, ensure your dog is comfortable around the water and the watercraft. Make your canine companion wear a life vest and keep them secure in the boat at all times.

5. Paddleboarding

Whenever I visit The White Water Center here in Charlotte, North Carolina, I see a bunch of people paddle boarding with their dogs. It’s so cute to see someone’s dog sitting at the edge of a paddleboard, soaking in the scenic views. If you enjoy the activity, try it with your pup. It can be a serene and bonding experience. Start by getting your dog comfortable with the paddleboard on dry land. Once they are used to it, move to shallow water and practice balancing together. Always use a life vest for your dog, and be patient as they adjust to the new experience.

6. Dock Diving

Dock diving is a competitive sport where dogs jump from a dock into the water to retrieve a toy. It’s a great way to combine a dog’s love for fetching with their enthusiasm for water. Many facilities offer dock diving classes and competitions, making it an exciting activity for both dogs and their owners.

7. Water Retrievals

Playing fetch in the water adds an extra layer of fun and challenge for your dog. There are numerous water-friendly toys available, such as floating balls, frisbees, and sticks. These toys are designed to be easily visible and durable enough to withstand constant retrieval from the water. This activity keeps your dog active and mentally stimulated while they cool off in the water.

Tips for Safe Water Activities

  • Supervision: Always supervise your dog around water, no matter how experienced they are.
  • Life Vest: Invest in a high-quality life jacket for your dog. Find out more about life vests for dogs in our full guide HERE.
