1. A Dog’s Purpose

By: W. Bruce Cameron

I laughed a lot. I cried a lot. Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite books. A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron is about one dedicated dog’s journey in search of the popular question: Why are we here? Written from a pup’s perspective, the main character is reborn several times throughout the book. In each life, he experiences a different start to life, develops unique connections with the humans around him, learns new things, makes great achievements, and finds yet another key to unlock his life’s true purpose.

From birth to his final breaths, A Dog’s Purpose first introduces Toby, a pooch who was born in the wild and rescued by a family passionate about saving canines. In a tear-jerking way, Toby’s life ends way too soon. Moments later, Toby is confused when he is reborn as a rambunctious golden retriever who is later named Bailey. Bailey’s adventures with his growing human pal Ethan are bound to pull you into the book and make your imagination go wild. But the lessons this four-legged fur ball learned as Bailey are far from over. Reborn yet again, the main character masters important lessons that he puts to use in his last life, helping him to ultimately find his purpose.

2. Craig & Fred: A Marine, A Stray Dog, and How They Rescued Each Other

By: Craig Grossi

This is the incredible true story of a US Marine named Craig Grossi and a stray dog named Fred. The two met on a remote battlefield in Afghanistan. Fred quickly captured Craig’s heart, and Craig risked jail time (and his life) to keep him. Once the unlikely pair returned home to the United States, it’s Fred who winds up rescuing Craig. The story is a definite must-read.

Watch this short video and let Sergeant Craig Grossi tell you, in his own words, what happened that day and how he and his dog Fred rescued each other.

You’ll notice that I’ve included two links for this book. That’s because the author wrote the book in two versions: Adult and Young Reader Edition. The story is identical, but the language is less salty in the Young Reader Edition.

3. Bring Jade Home

By: Michelle Caffrey

This is a true story of a 15-month-old Australian Shepherd named Jade who was lost in the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park after a horrific collision. The car Jade was traveling in had been hit head-on by a pick-up truck after it veered into their lane. While her human family was hurt and transported to the hospital, Jade managed to escape from the vehicle and bolted into the harsh, desolate wilds of the 2.2 million-acre park. Her owners, David and Laura were devasted. They left the hospital against medical advice in search of their pup. Join David and Laura in the ups and downs of the agonizing search. Days turn into weeks of harrowing effort as they and countless others join in to find Jade.

One 5-star reviewer (glenn) on Amazon put it this way:

“This book works so well because it works on multiple levels. It’s part family drama, part history, part science journal. This is a dog book, for sure, one that dog lovers will love. But the more important word in the title is “Home.” What does it mean to love an animal? What does it mean to bring that animal into your home and into your heart?”
