For many people, a vacation just wouldn’t be complete without Fido. Visiting exciting destinations, exploring unique attractions, and feasting on yummy food at new restaurants … there’s something special about traveling with your furry family member. It enhances your bond and leaves you with amazing memories. If you’re looking to book a dog-friendly vacation, check out these destinations.
1. San Diego, California
Every time I visit San Diego, I’m impressed with how dog-friendly it is. The sunny paradise offers numerous dog-friendly beaches, parks, and patio dining. One must-visit hotspot is Fiesta Island Park, a large island where dogs are welcome to explore sandy dunes and dip their paws in calm bay waters. Much of the area is also designated leash-free, which is great if your dog is trained with strong recall skills. Another place to stop by is The Original Dog Beach, located at the northern end of Ocean Beach. If you love to paddle board then you must check out SUP Pups … a certified instructor will teach you the basics of stand-up paddleboarding with your dog! After all of your water activities, swing by Muttropolis, a great dog boutique in La Jolla. When it’s time to grab a bite to eat, there are many restaurants and cafes that have dog-friendly patios.

2. Key West, Florida
Another perfect beach destination for dog lovers is Key West. The city features several dog-friendly beaches, such as Higgs Beach Dog Park and Key West Dog Beach, where your pup can run and play in the sand. There are also various tour companies that welcome Fido. Lazy Dog Adventures is one – they offer a few pet-friendly excursions, such as kayaking with your dog! Captain Sheri’s Wild About Dolphins is another – they offer dog-friendly eco-charter tours for dolphin viewing. Yes, your dog can enjoy a 3 or 4-hour private charter to see the dolphins with you!

3. Isle of Palms, South Carolina
Located on the outskirts of Charleston, SC, this is my go-to destination. Since it’s a short drive from where I live, I take my dogs to Isle of Palms beach quite often. You can find a dog-friendly Airbnb, spend the day at the beach, and then dine at a restaurant with outdoor seating (a lot of them allow dogs).
If you’re staying in the area for a few days, definitely make your way into the city of Charleston. Parts of this charming city feature cotton candy-colored buildings and cobblestone streets. Walk through Waterfront Park to find the famous pineapple water fountain! The area is a dream – you’ll leave with some beautiful photos and memories!

4. Asheville, North Carolina
Nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville offers a combination of nature and cultural arts. The city provides ample opportunities for outdoor adventures with your dog, such as hiking the local trails or exploring the Biltmore Estate. While dogs aren’t welcome inside the Biltmore, they can explore the grounds. Their website says, “Animals are allowed on the outdoor patios of Bistro and Cedric’s Tavern, but patio seating should be requested from the host or hostess inside first. All animals must be leashed on estate grounds.” Asheville’s downtown area also features various dog-friendly shops, breweries, and eateries.

5. Charlotte, North Carolina
Just south of Asheville, you have The Queen City – there’s a lot here for you and your furry companion. Spend the day at The U.S. National Whitewater Center. With 400 acres of woodlands along the Catawba River, it’s free to enter and walk the trails. Leashed dogs are allowed on the grounds, outdoor restaurants, hiking trails, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards. While the White Water Center does offer zip lines, high rope courses, and white water rafting, your dog isn’t allowed to partake in those activities. Charlotte also features many dog-friendly breweries, including Old Mecklenburg Brewery, NoDa Brewing Company, Sycamore Brewing, Triple C Brewing Co, Lucky Dog Bark and Brew, and the list goes on. Depending on the time of year you visit, you’ll likely be able to find an outdoor yoga class, where you will spot a dog or two. Plus, explore the area’s many parks and trails.

6. Bar Harbor, Maine
Bar Harbor is a picturesque coastal town with many outdoor dog-friendly activities. Visit Acadia National Park for a mixture of mountains and sandy beaches. According to Bring Fido, “With over 158 miles of hiking trails, 45 miles of carriage roads, and three campgrounds open to pets, you may never have enough time to explore every corner of this park, but even a glimpse will last in your mind for a lifetime.” If you’re into guided tours, check out Acadian Nature Cruises. On this excursion, you can bring your well-behaved and leashed pup along for a two-hour narrated cruise of Frenchman Bay. Be prepared to spot birds soaring in the sky and marine life jumping through the waters. Bar Harbor also offers restaurants that feature pet-friendly patios.

7. Austin, Texas
Everything is bigger in Texas … including its list of dog-friendly activities! Zilker Botanical Garden, Red Bud Isle, and Barton Creek Greenbelt Preserve all provide a fun outdoor day with your dog. In the mood for a shopping spree? The Domain is a dog-friendly shopping venue that features many high-end stores. While the venue welcomes dogs, not every store does … so make sure to ask before you enter each retailer.

8. Denver, Colorado
Hiking trails, parks, breweries, and more … there’s a lot for you to do with your dog in The Mile High City. Just check out this list of activities that Bring Fido put together. As you scroll through, you’ll notice A LOT of dog-friendly breweries. It makes sense since Denver has more breweries than any other city in the US, according to Move.org. So, after spending some active time outdoors, I hope you’re ready to drink up!

9. Portland, Oregon
Start your day by visiting one of Portland’s dog-friendly coffee shops. Then, visit one of the city’s numerous breweries (many allow dogs). On the pub list is Lucky Labrador Brewing Company. They have four locations throughout Portland, all of which welcome dogs. They’re so dog-friendly, they even host Dogtoberfest every September. While in Portland with your pup, also check out the eaterie Tin Shed Garden Cafe. Their menu even features a “For Puppies!” section.
Make sure to carve out time to explore the area’s extensive network of parks, such as Wildwood Trail in Forest Park or Tryon Creek State Natural Area. If you’re looking for a coastal hike, Crescent Beach Hike is a must! Or, if you’re looking for a calmer stroll, check out the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park. It’s the oldest continuously operating public rose test garden in the United States and features more than 10,000 roses. Come in June for peak bloom.

10. Sante Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe is known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. Plus, it has a lot of pet-friendly amenities. The city features several dog-friendly parks and trails where you and your pup can explore the beautiful Southwest scenery together. The Dale Ball Trails and the Santa Fe River Trail offer picturesque hiking opportunities.
