5 Easy DIY Dog Halloween Costumes (Budget Friendly)

Wanna dress your dog for Halloween, but rather not spend the money on a store-bought costume that your pup will likely only wear once? I get it! Those costumes can get pretty pricy. Maybe you’ve thought about DIY-ing a dog Halloween costume, but the idea of following a complicated pattern has you pressing the pause button. Well, I’ve got some great news for you: There are some SUPER EASY dog Halloween costumes you can throw together in a pinch! Watch my tutorial video to see how simple each of these are to make:

Mummy

It doesn’t get much easier than this. All you’ll need is some medical wrap that sticks to itself, and, when you’re ready to dress your pup in their costume, gently wrap it around them!

Supplies:

  • Medical wrap – The amount will vary depending on your dog’s size. One full wrap was enough for my 6 lb Chihuahua. My recommendations: 1 wrap = XS, 2 wraps = S, 2-4 wraps = M, 5+ = L. You can get this stuff at your local drugstore or right on Amazon.

Directions:

  1. When you’re ready to dress your dog, loosely wrap the self-adhering medical bandage around your pup’s tummy, front legs, and once around the head (but not near the eyes to avoid blocking vision). Since the wrap sticks to itself, there is no reason to tape it into place.

Dirty Dog Martini Glass

Feeling parched? How about ordering one dirty dog martini?! This idea is super cute and a cinch to throw together. If you already have a basic, plastic cone collar from your vet’s office (from a past procedure) then you already have one of the main supplies.

Supplies:

Directions:

  1. Using either a marker or paint, color all three styrofoam balls olive green.
  2. While the balls dry, cut 3 small circles out of the red felt. This will become the olive’s pimento.
  3. Using a hot glue gun, glue the red “pimentos” onto the styrofoam balls.
  4. Keeping the pimento in the center (as shown in the photo below), string the styrofoam onto the dowel.
  5. Line the bottom of your dowel with hot glue and secure it onto the plastic cone collar.
  6. Strap the collar onto your dog and show off their costume!

TY Beanie Baby

Growing up, I had a large collection of beanie babies. I remember visiting store after store with my parents, in search of the next best one. After all, we had to keep expanding the stockpile. So, needless to say, I can completely understand why millennial dog moms have made the TY Beanie Baby costume a popular one for their dogs.

Supplies

  • Photo of the TY tag to use as a stencil. Click HERE to download the one I used.
  • 3 sheets of thick cardstock: Gold foil, red, and white. I got mine at my local craft store.
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Hole puncher
  • Ribbon or string
  • Collar

Directions

  1. Blow up and print out the TY tag to your desired size.
  2. Cut your printed tag, creating stencils. You’ll need 3: One heart for the gold, one slightly smaller heart for the red, and the TY letters for the white paper.
  3. Trace and cut out pieces.
  4. With a glue stick, glue together both hearts. Then add the TY letters.
  5. Use a hole puncher to create a small hole in one corner.
  6. String ribbon through the hole and attach it to your dog’s collar.

Spider

This is actually my costume this year! I purchased a spider web poncho for myself and I’ll be dressing my dogs in spider costumes. I was originally planning to buy their costumes, but, after adding them to my Amazon cart, I decided to make them myself instead. This costume takes about 5 minutes to throw together and – if you like to craft – you may already have the supplies.

Supplies:

Directions:

  1. Twist three pipe cleaners together. Once you are 3/4 of the way done, add three additional pipe cleaners and keep twisting.
  2. Bend your twisted pipe cleaners in half and then shape them into spider legs. This will create two legs. Repeat until you have 8 legs.
  3. Wrap around your dog’s harness or collar.

3-Headed Dog

This is perhaps the spookiest costume on the list. Some people may think of the Greek myth, where the three-headed dog, Cerberus, guards the entrance to the underworld. Others may think of Fluffy from Harry Potter. Wherever your mind goes, this costume is one that will turn heads (haha, get it?!)

Supplies:

  • Dog collar
  • Two stuffed animal dogs (I got mine from the dollar store)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Marker

Directions:

  1. Cut the heads off two stuffed animal dogs. Sew the bottoms closed, so the stuffing remains intact.
  2. Sew one head onto your dog’s collar.
  3. Place the collar on your dog’s neck and mark where the next head should sit.
  4. Sew on the second stuffed animal head.
