Mini Pumpkin Pie Dog Treat Recipe

When it comes to holiday pie, are you team apple or pumpkin? Since I recently shared a Fido-friendly version of apple pie (you can get that recipe here), I knew I also needed to come up with a pumpkin pie version. These may look like a time-consuming and complicated recipe to create, but, they’re actually super simple. The process is similar to making homemade biscuits. In fact, hold onto the crust recipe and use it another time to create biscuits (by simply ditching the filling).

These mini pumpkin pie treats are the perfect addition to a holiday party … or a special way to tell your dog, “I love you!”

A Look at the Ingredients

Between the crust and the filling, you’ll be using:

  • Brown Rice and Oat Flours – This dog-approved pie is made with a blend of brown rice and oat flours, keeping it a gluten-free bite. My favorite flour brand is Bob’s Red Mill.
  • 100% Pure Pumpkin Puree – Pumpkin is considered a superfood for our canine cuties. It’s loaded with fiber, making it great for digestion and weight management. Plus, pumpkin also contains potassium and a moderate amount of protein. My favorite pumpkin brand is Libby’s. *This isn’t to be confused with pumpkin pie filling, which contains sugar and spices that aren’t good for dogs. Make sure to use a 100% pure pumpkin puree, which only lists pumpkin on the ingredient label. Find out more about the benefits of pumpkin puree for dogs in our Food Facts article HERE.
  • Egg – While the egg acts as a binder in this recipe, it also provides protein, vitamin D, and other beneficial nutrients.

Pumpkin Pie Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients

FOR THE CRUST
  • Olive oil, to grease muffin tin
  • 1 cup brown rice flour
  • 2/3 cup oat flour
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup pure pumpkin puree
FOR THE FILLING
  • 1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree
  • 1 large egg

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF and grease a mini muffin tin with olive oil. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add all crust ingredients. Stir with a spoon, until you're left with crumbly bits. Then, knead with your hands until you form a dough ball.
  3. Sandwich dough ball between two pieces of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to roll flat.
  4. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out crusts. Then, transfer to a mini muffin tin to shape.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes.
  6. In the meantime, make your filling by stirring together pumpkin puree and egg.
  7. Fill half-baked crusts. Then, bake an additional 15 minutes.

Notes

  • Store mini pumpkin pie dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or in the freezer for up to 1 month.
  • Don’t feel like making pie? Use the crust ingredients to create dog biscuits. Without the filling, these will last in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for 3 months.
